“There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward those of your people who are poor and needy in your land.”

Deuteronomy 15:11

ShopNShareHunger and poverty may be difficult to see in Falls Church and the surrounding Northern Virginia communities. Yet, in Fairfax County - ranked 2nd nationally for highest median household income - more than 105,000 residents are at risk of or are experiencing hunger (U.S. Census American Community Survey 2007 and U.S. Census 2000).

The scope of the local hunger crisis often makes people believe that one person’s action cannot be effective in helping. This is not true! Do not believe this! Every one of us can do something on behalf of our hungry neighbors to make a God-honoring difference in their lives. How are we portraying our faith in action in our own back yard? There is much to be done.

Volunteering at the Columbia Food Pantry, donating groceries, delivering donated food to the food pantry, helping prepare and or serve meals at a homeless shelter, watering and weeding; the Spend Yourself; vegetable and herb gardens, and planting extra vegetable plants in your garden to donate the produce to the pantry are just some ways you can help Columbia be openhanded to those in our neighborhood who need us.
