Amy Brereton - Minister to Preschoolers

Amy Brereton

Minister to Preschoolers

Dr. Amy Brereton holds a PhD and a MPhil in Educational Research from Cambridge University and a BS in Early Childhood Education from Gordon College. She has broad experience in the field of early childhood education and development, including research and publication, teaching both children and future teachers, and serving children and their families in a church environment. She is certified in both Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Special Education and has worked with infants and toddlers as well as preschoolers and school age children in a variety of educational and care settings and with a range of needs and abilities. She has also served on the District of Columbia’s (DC) Head Start Advisory Board and the DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education’s Board of Examiners. Amy, a New Hampshire native, now lives in Arlington with her husband Peter and their two young children, Peter and Isabelle (twins).

Beth Youmans - Afternoon Program Director/Preschool Camp Director

Beth Youmans

Afternoon Program Director/Preschool Camp Director

Beth is a native to Northern Virginia and a graduate of Marymount University. She also has completed Master’s level courses in the field of Music Education. Prior to her work at Columbia she sereved as a birth and postpartum doula. Her experience with young children spans in excess of 15 years.

Beth came to Columbia three years ago as the CDC's Music Teacher. The following year she made the move to Lead Teaching in the classroom where she has worked with children ages 2, 3, and 4. Beth is passionate about serving children, teachers, and families. One of Beth's favorite scriptures is when Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

When not at Columbia, Beth is likely visiting her grown children or with her husband Lloyd, watching their youngest play soccer. She loves language, traveling, and enriching cultural experiences.

Sheri Fry - Morning Program Director

Sheri Fry

Morning Program Director

Growing up in Ohio, Sheri attended Wright State University where she received an undergraduate degree in Social Work. Out of college she practiced Social Work in an AIDS service organization. Later she moved to upstate New York where she worked in a Mediation Center providing mediation services and directing a child advocacy program, Court Appointed Special Advocates. When Sheri and her husband moved their family to Virginia, she began work in daycare. She then worked at Vienna Baptist Children’s Center as the lead teacher for 2 year olds and then for 3 year olds. There she learned and practiced a Conscious Discipline approach to classroom management. She also worked with a curriculum framework that has similar basis to High Scope. After her time there, she felt led to work in her home community of Falls Church bringing her to Columbia Baptist. The opportunity for personal and professional growth and learning came as she accepted the position joining the Director Team.

Ashleigh Wykle - Director of Preschool Ministries

Director of Preschool Ministries

Ashleigh was born and raised in Virginia Beach, VA and a graduate of the University of Virginia. Ashleigh has eight years of early childhood education experience at Children’s World Daycare center in Virginia Beach as a teacher’s assistant for 2 year olds, lead teacher for 4 year olds and as an office administrator. After completing her undergraduate work at the University of Virginia, she felt God calling her into the ministry. She has been working at Columbia Baptist Church since January of 2010. Ashleigh just completed a Master’s Degree in Christian Leadership with a Children’s Ministry Certification at The John Leland Center for Theological Studies in June of 2013. In her free time she enjoys reading, going to UVA football games, and watching the Nationals play baseball.

Layci Clifford - Director of Grade School Ministries

Director of Grade School Ministries

Layci holds a Bachelors Degree in Business from Bluefield College and is currently working on her Masters in Children's and Family Ministry through Bethel Seminary. Layci has four years of volunteer and ten years of staff experience in the day care field including assisting in the classroom, being a camp counselor and director, coordinating an after school program, and designing age appropriate programs for preschool and grade school children. Layci has worked professionally in the field of children's ministry for eight years. She has a passion for working with children and partnering with parents in their journey to raise spiritual champions. She has a background in drama and dance and enjoys using those to design and develop fun, exciting learning experiences in both large group and small group settings. Layci and her husband, Kris, live in Falls Church City with their two boxer dogs and enjoy exploring DC and going to baseball games.

Melissa earned her B.S. in Business Administration from the University of West Florida in Pensacola. She has been an active member of Columbia Baptist Church for four years since moving to the area from Savannah, Georgia. She and her husband, Jay, have two daughters. Both of her daughters attended the CDC and now attend Camp Columbia.

Deanna Toman

Licensed Social Worker

Deanna is starting her 7th year at the CDC. Deanna has her Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education and her Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Deanna spent 7 years as an elementary school teacher before going back to school to get her Masters in Social Work. Her past experiences include working as a school counselor and with victims of domestic violence. Deanna is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist. She spends her time here at Columbia Baptist assisting teachers, parents and students with any issues or concerns that arise. Deanna is the mother of 3 boys. Two of her sons attended the CDC and her youngest is a current student!
