GUIDING PRINCIPLES

  • Focused: Doing it right rather than quick.
  • Transformative: Outcome-based input.
  • Just: Our best for the other's good.

A Little History

In 2008, after much prayerful discussion Dr. Baucom and other leaders recommended that Columbia establish a hunger relief and development ministry. The group chose Isaiah 58:10 as the theme scripture and the words “Spend Yourself®" as the name of the ministry. The church heartily approved Spend Yourself®. What began as a church call to action is now being fulfilled near and far.

SPEND YOURSELF® HAITI

Start Date: November 15, 2009
Location: Central Plateau, Haiti
Organizational Partner: World Vision International

Population: 3,000

Community Partners

La Begue (Population: 3,000) and Savane Plate (Population: 2,000) Projected Investment: $1,500,000 (2010-PRESENT)

Development Vision

The goal is for a community to become self-sustaining, self-sufficient, and self-supporting. Savane Plate and La Begue have become inspiring models, as measures of food security, clean water, sanitation/hygiene, and economic development have changed the community dramatically. The continued, repeated cycle of "projects-hope-transformation" is evident and positive, especially as community residents have begun to conduct projects themselves.

Admittedly, this is new territory for them, but by God's grace they are learning what they can do by His Spirit. They affirm that not only has their community changed; so has their way of thinking. “Over the years we have learned from this partnership that God has given us the ability to change our own situation and transform our community.” They know they serve a "can-do" Lord; now they are learning just what it means to be a "can-do" people.

Projects

Wells, latrines, goats, chickens, oxen, plows, home drinking water filtration systems, farming tools, an eight acre lake for irrigation and fish farming, two sugar mills, and a tool depot.
