Welcome to the Sharyn Byer Institute of Fine Arts. Formerly known as the Columbia Institute of Fine Arts, the institute has trained students for over 26 years in a wide range of musical disciplines. Sharyn Byer was one of our original instructors and embodied everything our institute represents. She was a professional musician, teacher and mentor whose love of music inspired her students to pursue their own life-long journey of musical excellence. Likewise, knowing that every student is different, our current instructors seek to provide exceptional instruction and guidance on an individual basis.

Private lessons from our highly qualified professionals are offered for all ages. All lessons and classes take place with the safe, caring environment of Columbia Baptist Church.

BALLET / DANCE CLASSES

The SIFA Dance Studio has been serving the city of Falls Church since 2003, giving the youth and adults of the community an introduction to classical ballet. SIFA offers students of all ages the opportunity to become familiar with this classical art form, with programs for children 6 years of age and up.

Where and how to train is an important decision and careful thought must be given to choosing the right school for your child. SIFA Ballet trains its students in the classical Russian style in compliance with the Vaganova method. The goal of SIFA is to give interested children an introductory education in a comfortable, yet organized atmosphere.

SIFA offers the following ballet programs:

Pre-Ballet Class

Introduction to dance. In this class students will learn basic forms of dance and learn how to understand the music and the rhythm. Class includes basic stretching and floor exercises. 

Beginner Ballet Class 

A basic class that introduces the students to the basic technique and positions of classical ballet. Class includes age appropriate rhythmic dances, basic stretching, and floor exercises. 

Ballet 1

Beginner ballet class that introduces students to the fundamental ballet technique. In this class students will learn proper body placement, ballet forms, and ballet positions. Class will include once a month conditioning and stretching exercises.

Ballet 2 

Intermediate ballet class for students who had been introduced to ballet terminology and ballet curriculum. In this class students will continue working on proper body placement and ballet forms. Class includes Ballet Barre, Center Barre, and Allegro. Class will include once a month conditioning and stretching exercises.

Ballet 3

Pre-advanced ballet class for students who have a stronger technique and can keep up with a more intense class. Class is structured with a Ballet Barre, Center Barre, Petite and Grand Allegro. It will include once a month conditioning and stretching exercises.

Beginner Pointe

This class is a beginner level pointe class. During this class we will focus on strengthening students’ feet and preparing them for a pointe work. The students will be taught the proper way of preparing and wearing pointe shoes. Class will be taken on flat and moved to pointe shoes at the teacher’s discretion and student readiness.

Immediate Pointe

This class is for students with previous experience dancing in pointe shoes and is focused on further developing pointe technique and preparing students for performing on pointe. 

Advanced Pointe 

This class is for students who are ready for more advanced pointe work and Classical Ballet variations.

Adult Ballet

This class is for all adults regardless of dance experience. Join this class to work on your posture, flexibility and to stay fit and healthy. Class includes Ballet Barre, Center Barre, Petite Allegro, Conditioning, and Stretching.
